Utah does not require any certification to work as a phlebotomist. However, even a cursory examination of job boards reveals a desire on the part of employers to hire employees who have at least some training and experience in phlebotomy. Though some schools offer a basic course which allows you to practice on fake arms or to perform one or two live draws, the extra education and practice time is well worth the money and time. This course will build your confidence, train you on all aspects of phlebotomy, and provide you ample time to practice live draws and stick.
Individuals with widely different backgrounds and training are drawing blood in physicians' offices and laboratories, clinics, homes, and hospitals. They range from employees with no medical or laboratory background, to certified phlebotomy technicians, to medical technologists, who are highly skilled professionals that have studied the theory and practice of venipuncture and specimen handling, as well as laboratory testing.
