Frequently Asked Questions
CNA Training
1) How long does it take to become a CNA?
Wasatch CNA Center offers a variety of classes to fit your schedule and to complete the required 80 hours state certified course. This includes at least 16-24 hours of clinicals. You may also elect to take CPR certification training. Once you have completed the course work and clinicals, you are ready to apply to take the state exam.
2) What kinds of skills and information will I learn? You will learn skills and information that will allow you to act as a Certified Nurses Aid. Please review the syllabus for more information regarding all the particulars.
3) How many students are in a class?
Classes range in size from 10-30 students, allowing classroom discussion, hands on participation and personalized attention from the instructor.
4) Is financial aid or assistance available?
Unfortunately, no tuition assistance is available. However, if you are currently employed with a nursing home or assisted living facility, some or all of your CNA training expenses may be covered. Please ask your employer for more information.
5) Who is the instructor?
We have several qualified instructors, all of them nurses, with years of experience in the health care industry. You can be assured you will receive a quality education from an experienced instructor. Most of our instructors are also currently employed in the field of nursing - not just teaching school, so they bring you the most current information and practical advice.
6) How much does it cost and what does that include? The cost is $375.00 (plus $25.00 for CPR certification training). This includes a $75.00 non-refundable deposit to register for the class (you have a three day 'cooling off' period, in which you can decide to withdraw from school and receive a full refund - after three days, your enrollment fee is non-refundable). The balance is due on the first day of class. The fee covers everything, including all instruction, the clinical supervision, book and training materials, hands on instruction, and practice exams. (CPR certification is $25.00 more). The only other cost is $70.00 for the state exams. You should plan to spend another $20 or so purchasing your own medical equipment. Wasatch CNA School can sell you these supplies at cost.
7) How do I apply to take the test?
Once you have completed all your course and clinical hours, you will be given a certificate of completion and a state testing voucher which you will use to register for the exam. More information regarding times and places for the exam will be covered in the class.
8) What is your refund policy?
If you decide not to attend the CNA class at all, your $75.00 deposit is non-refundable, unless you notify the school within three business days that you have decided not to attend school.
This notification must be in writing or in person (you may fax your notification to 801.531.1949, or come into the school – but telephone or email correspondence is not acceptable), in which case your deposit will be refunded to you. If you drop out of the course before the first day of class, you may apply your application fee to a subsequent course for an additional fee of $50.00, but you must take a class within six-months. You will then have to pay the additional $300.00 on the first day of the new class.
Once you begin classes, you are not eligible for any refund. Please plan your schedule carefully; ensuring you can meet the demands of the class schedule and clinical hours.
In order to drop out of the course at any time, you must do so in writing (by snail mail or fax 801.531.1949) or in person. Phone calls, emails, or other types of communication are not acceptable to successfully drop out of the program. If you pay the fee and do not drop out in writing or in person, your fee is forfeited.
9) How easy will it be for me to find a job once I am done with the classes and pass the test?
Even with the current downturn in the economy jobs are available. The Wasatch CNA Center assists students in finding work - and offers helpful information on how to find a job.
10) What happens if I miss a class?
Attendance is mandatory - it is absolutely mandatory. If you have to miss a class, you will need to contact the instructor to make up the missed material, although this is not always possible. Missing more than one class is grounds for expulsion from the class with no refund of your fees. Please make sure you can make all classes. You must notify the instructor of each class you miss BEFORE class - failure to notify the instructor will result in expulsion and forfeiture of all fees. We hold a space in the class for YOU - your failure to attend prevents us from giving that seat to another student.
11) What happens if I miss a clinical or CPR?
You can make up clinical hours the next time around, but there is a $50.00 fee to do so. Once you sign up for clinical hours, you must attend the entire time for credit towards your certification. The same is true for CPR - if you sign up - you must attend. Failure to attend the CPR training will result in forfeiture of the $25.00 fee. Please be responsible. Rare exceptions are made - but the payment of the $50.00 is not likely to be waived.
12) How is the coursework graded?
Wasatch CNA School grades on a Pass/Fail system. You must achieve at least a 75% to receive a passing grade. If you score below 75%, you will receive a failing grade. If you fail, you may review the material again and re-take the exam. If you fail the same exam a second time, you will be terminated from the course. You may only re-take one examination. Please study and be prepared for all examinations. This is a fast-paced course, please do not fall behind. If you are terminated from the course for failing grades, you will forfeit all fees.
13) How much is the state test?
There are two parts to the exam, a written portion which costs $35.00 and a skills exam which also costs $35.00.
14) If I fail the test, can I repeat the class?
Yes. If you fail the test, you can attend classes again for $100.00, one time. However, if you attend class each time, pay attention, read the handbook and complete all assignments you are likely to pass the test the first time around.
15) If I want to go to nursing school, do I need to be a CNA first?
Probably. Most nursing programs require that you become a CNA. The Wasatch CNA school is a good choice. You finish quickly and it is less expensive than many courses offered in the valley.
16) Why should I choose the Wasatch CNA Center for CNA training?
Though the school is not a non-profit, it acts like one! We want to see more qualified aides working in the valley and we are committed to making your experience a positive one. We will do everything we can to assist you in your efforts. We are in excellent standing with the Utah Nurse Assistants Registry and work hard to earn your respect.
17) Do I need to speak English to take the course?
Yes. Although the school is developing classes in Spanish and Russian, the state skills exam is in English - though the written portion is offered in Spanish too. Unfortunately, if you are not proficient in English the course may prove too difficult - all of our courses are fast paced and you need to be able to understand complex medical terminology. Although we attempt to provide each student with the aides, skills, methods, training and resources to pass their state exams and to learn how to become productive CNA's - we cannot make up for a lack of English proficiency. We suggest you take some English classes BEFORE taking our CNA class.
18) Why does this school have more clinical hours than is required (24 instead of just 16)?
Because we listen to our students! Even though it is more expensive for the school to offer a longer clinical rotation, we have found students pass their skills exam more often with the extra clinical rotation. We offer what the student needs, not just the minimum requirements or what is "cheapest" for the school.
19) Do I get to keep my textbook and workbook?
Yes. It is important for students to have access to the textbook and workbook during the course and will be a valuable resource after you become a CNA. Avoid schools that "share" textbooks, or let you "use" them in class.
Frequently Asked Questions About Phlebotomy Education and Training?
1) Do I need to have phlebotomy training to get into nursing school or to work as a CNA?
No. But, it is helpful to have some basic training in phlebotomy - especially if you plan to become a nurse, medical assistant or work in a clinic or hospital as an aide.
2) Is the course you offer Nationally Certified?
YES! The Wasatch CNA Center offers three tiers of instruction to meet your needs.
Tier One: 8-Hour Basic Phlebotomy Course offering an introduction and overview of Phlebotomy. Students enrolling in this course attend the first two nights of the Advanced Course and may at that time decide to continue with the advanced course, or stop and receive a Completion Certificate for Basic Phlebotomy.
Tier Two: 36-Hour Advanced Course curriculum is nationally certified using best practices which provides students with the information, skills and practice draws they need to feel confident and prepared to work as Phlebotomists. The course includes at least 25 live successful venipuncture draws and at least 10 successful capillary sticks. There is no additional testing fees and students receive a Completion Certificate.
Tier Three: 36-Hour Advanced Course with Externship includes everything in Tier Two, but also offers students an externship opportunity. This is the preferred course as it allows students to gain significantly more on-the-job experience than any other course offered. Employers nearly always want to hire phlebotomists with some experience and confidence. After you finish this class and the externship you will feel and act like a true professional in the field. Job Placement Assistance available. Tuition does not include a $105.00 national testing fee. Students receive national certification (if they pass the exam) and a Completion Certificate.
3) How do I pay for the phlebotomy courses?
You will need to send us a non-refundable deposit of $100.00 at least three days before classes begin in order to hold your seat. The final payment of:
Tier One: $40.00
Tier Two: 375.00
Tier Three: $395.00
is due on the first day of class. If this is an issue, please call the school, sometimes we can make payment arrangements.
6) What is your refund policy?
If you decide not to attend the phlebotomy course that you registered for, your deposit is non-refundable, unless you notify the school within three business days that you have decided not to attend school.
You will then have to pay the additional tuition on the first day of the new class.
Once you begin classes, you are not eligible for any refund. Please plan your schedule carefully; ensuring you can meet the demands of the class schedule. If you miss the first day of class, you will be terminated from the class and you will forfeit all your fees. With your payment we hold your space, often turning away other students so attendance is important. After the first day of class, students may miss ONE class with approval from the instructor. If you miss more than ONE class, you WILL be expelled from the program and your fees forfeited.

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan, 'press on' has solved, and always will solve, the problems of the human race." ~ Calvin Coolidge
